    Job Title: Restoration Intern


    Company Description: Hedgerow Farms is located north of Winters, on the west side of the Sacramento Valley. It is a well-known and recognized seed production farm specializing in growing California native grasses, sedges, rushes, and wildflowers. There are approximately 400 acres under cultivation with over 50 annual and perennial species, many of which have multiple bioregional ecotypes available. Planting, harvest, seed cleaning, storage, marketing, sales and delivery are handled on the farm. There is also a nursery and a native straw operation. In addition to farming activities, over the past 25 years Hedgerow Farms has been instrumental in pioneering and promoting farmland wildlife habitat and conservation practices that are compatible with intensive agriculture. Hedgerow Farms is recognized as a model of those practices, with 100 acres of habitat restoration on site which include hedgerow corridors on field borders, field tail water ponds that filter runoff and provide riparian and wetland habitat, irrigation canals transformed into native riparian systems, roadside native vegetation planting, and wildlife habitat restoration on marginal farm land (wetland, riparian, grasslands, shrublands, etc.). Teaching, training, demonstrations, and research play an integral role in the mission of Hedgerow Farms.

    Job Description: Restoration Intern Hedgerow Farms, Winters CA Hedgerow Farms seeks an intern to work in support of our operation. This is an unpaid temporary position (end date is negotiable). The intern would work up to 20 hours a week performing a variety of tasks. Depending on intern interest and project tasks, a time commitment of over 20 hours per week can be offered pay at a rate based on experience and skills. Additionally, the intern will take part in some of the activities associated with Audubon California’s Landowner Stewardship Program, which works with local landowners on habitat restoration projects compatible with agricultural operations, the Center for Land-Based Learning, Yolo County Resource Conservation District, Lower Putah Creek Coordinating Committee and Putah Creek Council. Job responsibilities Interns will assist Hedgerow Farms staff with the following duties: Implementation of field activities, including site preparation, planting, installing temporary irrigation and other ongoing maintenance. Seed collection and/or cleaning. Weed control, including proper use of herbicides and herbicide delivery systems. Maintaining field equipment and tools in working condition. Assisting in the prescribed fire program. Revegetation of canals and creation of a field guide to canal vegetation maintenance. Collecting & monitoring data at field sites. Running native plant propagation/nursery operations. Participating in staff meetings, program evaluation, and long-term planning. Qualifications Ability to perform physically-demanding field tasks, including but not limited to: manual labor required for preparation of sites for planting, planting native plants and installing irrigation equipment, active participation in prescribed burns, and operation of some farm equipment (e.g., tractor, spray rig, harrow, ATV). Excellent communication skills with a diverse array of people including the farm managers, landowners, agency representatives, students, and paid laborers. Ability to execute tasks both independently and as part of a team. Ability to work flexible hours. Desirable skills and training (Important but not required) An understanding of/interest in wildlife habitat restoration and outdoor environmental education. Ability to communicate in Spanish.
